You check the ESP dashboard. It says delivered. Green checkmark, no bounce, no complaint. Then a customer emails to ask where their order confirmation went, or you get curious and search your own Gmail account, and there it is: sitting in Spam, never opened, doing nothing for anyone.
Nothing about that is a bug. Nothing about it will show up as an error in your ESP. “Delivered” and “in the inbox” are two different claims, and the gap between them is exactly where a quarter of Gmail-bound ecommerce email lives.
We pulled 514,492 monitored Gmail messages from 11 June to 11 September 2026 — the same window as our DMARC study — and tracked where each one actually landed. This is what moved the needle, and what didn’t.
What “Delivered” Actually Means (and Doesn’t)
Your ESP’s delivered status is an SMTP-layer claim: Gmail’s mail servers accepted the message instead of rejecting it outright. That’s a real and useful signal — a hard bounce means something is badly broken. But acceptance and placement are two separate decisions, made at two separate moments.
After Gmail accepts a message, it runs its own filtering pass: authentication checks, sender reputation, engagement history, content signals. Only then does it decide Primary, Promotions, or Spam. Your ESP has no visibility into that second decision. It reports the first one and calls it done. So “delivered” is true and unhelpful at the same time — it tells you the message left the building, not which room it ended up in.
Where Gmail Actually Puts Ecommerce Email
Here’s the room breakdown.
Gmail Placement — 11 June to 11 September 2026
Gmail — All Monitored Messages
One in four Gmail-bound messages in this dataset never reached a folder anyone checks. And Primary inbox, the destination most people picture when they hear “delivered,” was the smallest slice by far — under 10%. If you’re benchmarking your own program against “did it arrive,” you’re benchmarking against the wrong bar. The realistic contest for ecommerce mail in Gmail is Promotions versus Spam, and Primary is mostly a rounding error.
Gmail Isn’t Yahoo, and It Isn’t AOL
If you run a blended deliverability dashboard across providers, this next part is probably why your Gmail problem doesn’t show up on it.
Placement by Provider — Same Period
Yahoo and AOL show as 100% inbox in this dataset. Read that as a monitoring-coverage note, not a claim that these providers never filter mail — see the methodology section below.
That Yahoo and AOL bar isn’t a typo, and it isn’t a claim that those providers have no spam filter. It reflects how this monitoring panel is built: our Yahoo and AOL seed coverage in this dataset tracks inbox arrivals and doesn’t yet break out a separate Promotions-style tab or spam-folder placement the way our Gmail panel does. Real-world Yahoo and AOL spam filtering exists and is well documented elsewhere; it’s just not what this specific slice of data measures.
The useful takeaway isn’t about Yahoo or AOL at all. It’s about your own dashboard. If your deliverability tool reports one blended number across every provider, Gmail’s 25.04% spam rate gets diluted by inbox-heavy numbers from other providers the moment you average them together. A blended average will always look healthier than your Gmail-specific number. If you only ever look at the combined figure, you can miss a real Gmail problem for months. Look at Gmail on its own.
Authentication Inside Gmail: The Clearest Lever We Found
This is the part with the least ambiguity in the whole dataset.

When a message doesn’t fully pass SPF, DKIM and DMARC, its spam rate more than doubles — from 24.36% to 51.57%, a 2.12x jump. It’s also worth reading what this table doesn’t say: 24.36% of fully authenticated mail still landed in spam. Authentication is the floor, not a placement guarantee. It just happens to be the floor a lot of senders haven’t finished pouring.

Does Klaviyo Get Special Treatment in Gmail?
Short answer: a little. Not the free pass some threads make it sound like.

Klaviyo vs. Baseline — Within Gmail
Klaviyo sends in our sample had a spam rate about 12% lower, relatively, than everything else combined, and an inbox rate about 18.5% higher, relatively. That’s a genuine edge, plausibly related to Klaviyo’s default handling of authentication and list-suppression signals. It is not, on its own, the difference between a healthy sending domain and a filtered one — the gap between Klaviyo and baseline here is much smaller than the gap between authenticated and unauthenticated mail above. Which ESP you use matters less than what you do with it.
Sending Volume and Gmail Trust
This is the sharpest pattern in the whole dataset, and it isn’t the one you’d guess.
Placement by Gmail Sending Volume Band (per brand, this period)
Volume bands here are each brand's Gmail-only message count for the period — not their total sending volume across every provider.
Read the two ends: brands sending under 10 Gmail messages in the period averaged 35.7% spam. Brands sending 1,000 or more averaged 7.46% — a 4.8x difference. Established Gmail sending volume clearly buys trust.
But look at the Inbox column while you’re at it: it barely moves. 9.37% at the bottom, 9.61% at the top, wobbling in between. Volume doesn’t get you into Primary. What it buys is the difference between Promotions and Spam — the Promotions share climbs from 54.93% to 82.93% across the same bands. More Gmail history moves a brand from “half your mail is filtered” to “almost all of it reaches Promotions.” It does not move a brand toward the inbox tab people picture when they hear “landed.”
A methodology note worth sitting with: these bands are each brand’s volume within Gmail sends only, not their total volume across every provider. We also pulled the same volume-band breakdown across all three providers combined:

Notice the inbox column is much higher here than in the Gmail-only table above — 16.69% versus 9.37% at the low end. That’s the same blending effect from the Yahoo/AOL section: mixing in providers with high measured inbox rates lifts every band’s blended average above what Gmail alone would show. And because a brand’s Gmail-only volume can put it in a different band than its all-provider volume (a brand sending mostly through Yahoo could rank low on Gmail volume and high overall, or the reverse), the two tables aren’t a row-for-row comparison of the same brands — they’re two different partitions of a similar-sized dataset. Use the Gmail-only table above if what you care about is Gmail specifically, which, if you’re reading this article, is probably why you’re here.
So What Do You Actually Do With This
Nothing here is exotic. It’s a short, ordered list, and most of it is stuff you can start this week.
- Stop trusting “delivered” as your placement metric. It measures SMTP acceptance, not inbox placement. Check where your mail actually lands in Gmail specifically — not blended across providers — using Google Postmaster Tools or an inbox placement monitor.
- Finish authentication first. It’s the single clearest lever in this data: full SPF/DKIM/DMARC alignment cut the Gmail spam rate more than in half. If you haven’t published a DMARC record, start here; if you’re on Klaviyo, the custom sending domain setup is the prerequisite step.
- Don’t expect your ESP to be a fix on its own. Klaviyo’s edge over the baseline in this data was real but modest. Whatever you send through, the authentication and reputation work still has to happen.
- Build Gmail-specific sending history, and expect Promotions, not Primary, to be the reward. Consistent volume moved brands out of spam and into Promotions, not into the inbox tab. Plan your campaigns — and your open-rate expectations — around Promotions as the realistic destination.
- Separate your Gmail number from your blended number. If your dashboard averages every provider together, it can hide a real Gmail-specific spam problem for months. Pull Gmail placement on its own.
The Bottom Line
Across 514,492 Gmail-bound ecommerce messages from 11 June to 11 September 2026, a quarter landed in spam despite whatever your ESP’s dashboard said. Authentication was the clearest lever we found — unauthenticated mail was filtered at more than double the rate. ESP choice mattered, modestly. Sending volume mattered a lot, but mostly by moving mail out of spam and into Promotions rather than into Primary. And if your reporting blends Gmail together with providers that behave very differently, you may be looking at a number that has nothing to do with what Gmail is actually doing to your mail.
“Delivered” was never the finish line. It was just the point where your ESP stopped watching.

Methodology
Period: 11 June 2026 to 11 September 2026, the same window as our DMARC record study.
Gmail dataset: 514,492 monitored ecommerce messages received at Gmail addresses through InboxEagle’s inbox placement monitoring infrastructure, classified into Primary inbox, Promotions, or Spam.
Provider comparison dataset: 598,561 total monitored messages across Gmail (514,492), Yahoo (47,205) and AOL (36,864) over the same period. Yahoo and AOL placement in this panel is recorded as inbox arrivals; this monitoring slice does not currently break out a Promotions-equivalent tab or spam-folder placement for those two providers the way it does for Gmail, so the 100% inbox figures reported for Yahoo and AOL reflect monitoring scope, not a claim that those providers apply no spam filtering.
Authentication breakdown: Of the 514,492 Gmail messages, 501,614 (97.5%) were fully authenticated (passing SPF, DKIM and DMARC with alignment) and 12,878 (2.5%) were not fully authenticated.
ESP breakdown: Of the same 514,492 Gmail messages, 63,880 (12.4%) were sent through Klaviyo and 450,612 (87.6%) through all other ESPs combined.
Volume bands: Each brand was bucketed by its own message volume for the period. The Gmail-only table groups 17,524 brands by their Gmail-specific send volume (summing to the full 514,492 Gmail messages). The all-provider table groups 18,119 brands by total volume across Gmail, Yahoo and AOL combined (summing to 598,561 messages). Because a brand’s Gmail-only volume and its all-provider volume can differ, the same brand may fall into a different band in each table; the two tables should be read as separate distributions rather than a row-for-row comparison of the same senders.
Limitations: This is a monitored panel skewed toward ecommerce brands using major ESPs, not a representative census of all Gmail-bound email. Percentages are drawn directly from the underlying counts and may not sum to exactly 100% in every row due to rounding. Yahoo/AOL monitoring coverage is narrower than Gmail coverage, as noted above, and should not be read as evidence those providers place zero mail in spam.
